Travellers are being warned of a Chinese Government ban on Lonely Planet's popular China Travel Guide.
Lonely Planet has posted a warning on its website suggesting travellers disguise the book or make a copy of important details, following about 30 reports of confiscations in the past 18 months.
China's ministry of foreign affairs has confirmed that the guide was banned last year because of a map that depicts the People's Republic of China and Taiwan as separate countries, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.
The Chinese Government views Taiwan as a renegade province, denying that the island has any sovereignty and advocating reunification with the mainland.
Marking the Chinese mainland and Chinese Taiwan in different colours on the map was a breach of Chinese law, a ministry spokeman told the newspaper.
Lonely Planet general manager Tony McKimmie told the Herald the editorial content of the guidebook would not be changed, regardless of whether the ban was extended. - Travelpress travel news
