170kg man sues Air France for making him buy an extra seat

When Frenchman Jean-Jacques Jauffret, who weighs 170kg, checked in for his flight from New Delhi to Paris, he says he was humiliated by Air France staff who got out wrapping tape and measured around his belly in front of other passengers.

They decided he was too big and was made to purchase an extra seat for the flight, after he asked if he could have a spare seat next to him because of his size.

Mr. Jauffret successfully sued Air France last week and they were ordered to pay almost $14,000 in damages plus give him the money back for the extra seat he was made to buy.

Air France was ordered to pay €8000 ($13,600) in damages and to reimburse the cost of his second seat, in a ruling delivered last Friday.

“The court recognised the humiliation I suffered. Now Air France is going to have to say clearly what is its commercial policy. Does it carry people or kilos?” he said.
