Backpacker group warns of Sydney hostels 'death traps'

A British backpackers group has raised concerns about safety standards in Australian hostels.

Tom Griffiths from Gapyear.com says a 2005 report found 100 Sydney hostels were dangerous.

Mr Griffiths says his clients are reporting there are still Sydney hostels with obstacles like limited exits, locked doors and barred windows.

"If a fire breaks out at three o'clock in the morning, let's be honest, alot of the backpackers are gonna be under the influence of alcohol, maybe drugs, there's eight different languages going on," he said.

"That is a serious situation and we could have another Childers hostel fire on our hands."

He says he is worried not all the recommendations have been implemented from the hostel fire at Childers, in south-east Queensland, that killed 15 backpackers.

"In this day and age there's no excuse to have a hostel out there which is a death trap in a fire situation," he said.

"It's a question of putting a bit of the profits back."
